That full pairing and observation is also often the only way that a mentor can pass on the things they’ve forgotten they know. It can be shocking how quickly we can forget that what is now muscle memory was once mystery.

watching someone experienced work is a very underrated way to level up. "tacit knowledge transfer" is how we learn all the little tips and techniques and shortcuts that make experts so dang fast and effective, and it's really, really hard to learn that stuff in other ways

For The Programming Podcast, we are VERY selective on the guest cohosts we bring on. We try to make sure that if they are there, it is for a huge purpose, and y'all seem to love this. Who should we start aiming to bring on next? Who do YOU want to hear, and the big one, WHY?

Okay, for the folks who asked: here's the majority AI view, writing up the reasonable, thoughtful view on AI that the vast majority of people in tech hold, that gets overshadowed by the bluster and hype of the tycoons trying to shill their nonsense.

More than *anything* the people who actually know how technology works, who actually build things, wish that people would treat LLMs like every other technology, and be normal about them. Don't build a religion about them, don't force them on people, don't ignore the problems. Just be normal.

"I have a decent fluency in LLMs, and they have utility, but the absurd degree of over-hype, the way they're being forced on everyone, and the insistence on ignoring the many valid critiques about them make it very difficult to focus on legitimate uses where they might add value."

the curse of being a dedicated generalist is that I worked on this design and started feeling nostalgic for the days I was a FT designer then I worked on code and missed the days when I was a FT programmer as a generalist, everything is fun and there's never enough time to focus on any of it 😭
