I spent the holiday doing nothing. I read 3 books, didn’t open my computer at all, and probably spent a combined hour on social media for four days. reeeaaaally should remember to take these kinds of breaks more often, because I’m coming back with so much creative energy

I don’t know how common they are outside of cities like Portland, but we go to local indie theaters (e.g. Hollywood Theater, Laurelhurst Theater) and the experience is consistently great

I just realized my talk ("All the things I misunderstood about being a leader") from @leaddev.com is available to watch on their site, and I'm pretty sure this is the best slide deck I've ever made

You can apply this to so much! I refer to this as “labs thinking.” It’s where you allow yourself the degrees of freedom needed to explore the problem space. Then once you’ve formed a better world model you can build a more accurate representation within tighter constraints.

This is one of my favorite bits of advice that I follow all the time. Writing code, throwing it away, and then writing again allows you to understand how all the different parts will play together and ultimately build the right thing the second time.

"build one to throw away" applies to so many things

my best code is written in a two-step process: 1. kludge a working prototype together, don’t worry about the code AT ALL. the point is understanding how the requirements function in reality 2. destroy the prototype completely. build the app for real using my better mental model
