I don't think tech at large understands how hard it is to be an open source maintainer right now. So many great folks are on the brink of burnout. Funding is drying out. We live in a security minefield. Companies think humans are disposable. If you're a maintainer, we care. You deserve the world.

I'm about to say something I haven't said in 8 years: I'm looking for a full-time job. I'm looking for the right role with the right people and the right mission, all of which I've laid out in this blog post. I'm mostly interested in something new, so if this sounds like your team I'd love to talk.

The more I think about this, the more I recognize how likely very close to truth this assertion is. Dev tooling, especially when it comes to process automation, needs a rethink. Too much hinges on Rube Goldberg machines.

People can train and tune their own models through lived experiences. You were born with all the hardware you need. This is what separates us from the machines that rely on the training data we produce. We are the input to their output.

This generation of AI tooling will not change the CI/CD process. People will continue setting up dominos of shell scripts and using triggers to knock them over.

Automating busy work is busy work.

AI has created a new abstraction layer so more people can also"create" apps but the machine is doing ALL of this same stuff behind the scenes.

Wife: The way you know AI is a scam is that the same party and people who have been waging war on public school funding for 50 years are now pushing to spend tax money to get AI into public schools and saying they're doing it to "level the playing field" or so "kids don't get left behind"

Being a developer isn't limited to those writing code.

AI has not changed the way software is built. Code is written using the same syntax, version controlled using the same version control systems, compiled using the same compilers, deployed to the same servers, and neglected by the same developers.

Tailscale has recently "found" two SQLite corruption bugs, now both fixed upstream in sqlite.org/releaselog/3... The first: sqlite.org/wal.html#wal... The second: sqlite.org/staleexpridx... Fun times holding SQLite in unique ways! SQLite folk have been a joy to work with & worth every penny.

Every tech cycle we see demands for companies to lose their identities and chase the latest trends just so we have something to talk about.

This is the biggest drawback of social media.
