I think coding is one of the best use cases I’ve seen for LLMs. There are still problematic aspects of that even, but it’s much better than situations where people think the chatbots are thinking or giving out factual information.

a part of why i am kinda open-weight-maximalist about this stuff is for local use or hosted provider substitution - there are already some other perpetual subscriptions built into the practice (eg servers, domains) but we're fine with them because they're optional + competitive

Why is every presenter super excited?

I think this hits the nail on the head. Traditional coding consists of a lot of copying and pasting, and a lot of repetition — this is the reason frameworks and libraries are so essential. AI assisted coding is a huge timesaver in this respect.

If you're new to the software industry, or looking for a job, you really should be listening to those doing the work. You don't have to agree with everything they say, but you should be listening. Ask questions and challenge everything -- even if you can't afford to say it out loud.

When it was slow to write code, it was slow to accumulate technical debt. What is it about LLMs that won't result in accumulating technical debt even faster than before?

Asked my son if he wanted a book to learn how to make games in Python. He says "yeah, that way I can learn how to do it on my own instead of telling the AI what I want. That sounds more fun" Hopefully he's a trend setter.

I don't care about LLMs or AI. I care about people. AI is just a tool to me. Tools enable people to help or harm at a scale beyond their natural abilities. I care about how people treat each other using these tools.

I don't use any LLMs, but to be fair I'm also retired, and get to write code on my own terms. Also, writing code isn't the end all be all for me, so I've never optimized my workflow around generating code as fast as possible.

This version of the future isn't appealing to me.

Why learn to code when you can use an LLM and pay a subscription fee for the rest of your life.

Having a linguistics background I think there's a huge misconception when it comes to prompting LLM's, the vast majority thinks that coding is "hard" compared with speaking a natural language. Well it's actually the contrary from a utilitarian POV less verbs at your disposal => easier to be specific

Generative AI is a slop generation machine by default. You have to put in a lot of work to get something of quality from it.

"Bad thing existed before I made it easier to do bad thing" isn't the argument you think it is.

This can be enforced to the same extent that "handmade" is enforced today. That's to say, it's damn near impossible.
