I think this post really helped me finally get a grasp on not just this division, but also the actual architecture of atproto. It kinda clicked finally. Added to having experienced the relative ease of a PDS migration, and the "domain as handle" thing. Next to learn is PDS itself and lexicons.

I'd recommend reading this, it's such a clear guide to how ATProto works. The fact that's all just *files* makes it obvious how the migration to eurosky was so simple, brings the prospect of self-hosting a bit closer. It also demonstrates the impossibility of a social media ban.
