No one of the three essential tools of emotional regulation-- self talk, mental focus, & physiology, especially breathing-- is a magic bullet. Which one(s) to deploy will depend on the trigger & your resources in the moment. Develop them all. Put your eggs in multiple baskets.

Buildings that are destroyed in moments take years, & enormous investment, to rebuild. That's us in trauma recovery. Whether we were hurt all at once or over time, recovery will often be longer than our trauma-- because we want it to be realistic, stable, functional, & enduring.

Trauma recovery isn't about "fixing" yourself. It's about caring for yourself in ways you never experienced & were never taught. "Fixing" is a simplistic, degrading frame for recovery. You don't need to be fixed. You need to be loved-- first & most consistently from the inside.

I believe the world does not understand or adequately acknowledge the impact of events, traumatic & otherwise, on humans, nor does it teach or offer us effective tools & strategies to manage that impact. "Resilience" is not a tool. "Suck it up" is not a strategy.

By my count we’re up to at least 17 stages of grief
