This story about a woman who spent 5 months in jail after being incorrectly identified with AI face recognition software is dystopian and terrifying, but even beyond the AI bullshit - why was she in jail for so long without anyone knowing she had been arrested?

The $30/hour number Starbucks quotes? It's not a wage. It's a total compensation figure that requires benefits most baristas are deliberately scheduled too few hours to qualify for. New episode with

It took me a while to put my thoughts together, but I had to write about that Atlantic piece--even though I've never placed a single sports bet in my life:

My daughter is really bummed about the play being over and after seeing it 4 times in a row I kind of feel sad too. I thought I’d get sick of it but now I’m really sad I’ll never get to see it again. Live theater is fascinating in that way.

I watched Malcolm X last night with my kids and I still can’t believe it wasn’t even nominated for best picture. Spike Lee really did have a rough go in Hollywood. His prime was so much better than any of the darling auteurs that followed.

The first vote I ever cast was for Jesse Jackson. It was in my second grade class mock election, and Jesse won in a rout. He was aided by the fact that our teacher, Mrs Lacey, wore a Jackson pin nearly every day. I was very confused and upset when he didn’t become president that year.
