LAPD killed a woman’s dog on Friday. The officers showed up 20 deep w/ a helicopter over a noise complaint. LAPD claims the dog “charged” at them. The labradoodle was wearing a Knick’s jersey, too. The video is distressing. I’ll link it in the thread.

never ever EVER trust an automatic speech processing system. I use one for transcription and I go through each transcript myself, often at 75% speed to fix the errors (and there are always errors).

I have been working on societal impacts of language technology since late 2016, and my nightmare example since pretty early on has been using automatic transcription in emergency services systems. And today I learn it's happening *in my own city*

I think being anti AI is entering a more mainstream phase! While incredibly good at the same time we're finally meeting a low bar. This means: 1) more critical thinking is needed now as non-experts are making anti AI arguments so we could promote worse arguments overall — remember: 1/

So Erin Reed blocked me over this one but I’m going to take a few minutes to point out why this “reporting” is so bad and repost a few times to hopefully spread the word. TL;DR Erin either doesn’t understand anything about NYC law or politics or is outright lying about what’s happening here.

I've reported on Musk for around 8 years. I've co-authored a book on him. I don't think folks understand the rate of his wealth accumulation. Shortly after he helped elect Donald Trump in Nov 2024, his net worth was around $350 billion. That net worth has nearly tripled in less than two years.

Because FIFA’s sponsorship deals require WC venues to have generic names instead of their regular, already-sponsored names, the result is that maps abiding by this rule end up looking like a campaign overview / quest line progress screen from a fairly cheaply-made video game.

this gets at one of the root problems of LLMs for creative work. if an LLM routinely sees a particular word, phrase, or idiom, it assumes it is significant and thus leans on it more if a 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 saw the same name hundreds of times, they'd get fucking sick of it

Worth noting that in 1921, the American Yiddish-language press described the anti-Black Tulsa massacre as a “pogrom,” because they knew that was the word that would best make their immigrant Ashkenazi Jewish readers understand what happened.

The reason the game industry keeps laying people off and canceling games despite consumer appetite is because the game industry doesn’t exist any more. It’s been subsumed into the black hole of venture capital, which deliberately believes there is value in treating every industry the same.

Profitable isn’t enough, VC have to make enough of a profit when they sell or IPO to fund their next leveraged acquisition as well as their next vacation home. Short term balance sheets are what matters because they’re not sticking around. This is what a house feels like while it’s getting flipped.
