Starbucks is abruptly scrapping its AI inventory tool for repeatedly miscounting and mislabeling items, just months after rolling it out at stores nationwide. It's the latest warning that the widely-hyped "AI revolution" could be a bubble that's going to burst.

Exploring new depths to the word Misnomer, the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued a loathsome set of rules targeting trans people. In response, a reminder that in doing so the U.K. breaches EU data protection law & its own adequacy decision.

Today, I managed to cycle all the way to Lower Hutt from my apartment in Newtown, Wellington. It's about 20km and I was able to use cycle lanes and/or shared paths for pretty much the whole way there! I didn't think I'd be able to do this in my lifetime, and I'm absolutely stoked.

The other day there was a great thread about what the Tholians on Star Trek really looked like (one is partially seen on a viewscreen on one episode), what kind of lifeform they may have been. All of this is more-or-less contradicted by later, aired Star Trek shows, but the speculation is more fun.

Long term state housing provides people with stability, you absolute ghoul. It means people can become part of a community, children don't have to keep changing schools, they have enough left over from rent to afford food ... to frame this as "dependency" is as bad as Willis's lotto reference

its funny both left wing reporters like chad loder and far right terrorists like tarrio agree that the slush fund is designed to buy arms for right wing terror orgs. the media is still framing the objections as "rewarding people who assaulted our beloved cops." like its actually much worse!

This is what I mean about it being unworkable, btw - there's literally no provision in any law for removing someone from a given toilet. Toilets aren't legally protected spaces. What this does is simply create a disincentive for a trans person to risk being trans in public.

The fact that Seymour is announcing the decision is chilling because a basic foundation of Pharmac’s integrity and success is its independence and commitment to evidence-based decisions. Politicians should not be deciding which medicines get funded, or who should get access to them.

Relieved to see a decent response from the NZ Human Rights Commission to the NZF terf bill, with comments from the Commissioners who *aren't* terfs themselves. Doubly relieved since the UK's EHRC has been a travesty for so long, & now only exists to campaign against trans people having a wee.
