Part of the issue is that data is inherently viewed as an asset rather than nuclear waste Ideally, companies would view data as something they only want the bare minimum of in order to function before discarding it as soon as they can Knowing my birthday to send me an email is unnecessary

Yeah, I think there some kind of contortion where they draw a face on the machine and now the machine - rather than its maker or its users - are responsible, and yet - FLIP - machines can't be morally judged, they just need retraining/guardrails.

the administration wants to frame this (bizarrely) as law enforcement. but if law enforcement conducted a raid for a suspect and killed 40 people, including an unknown number of unarmed civilians, it would be treated as a clear disaster like Waco.

I’ve been working full time to stop this war since last summer and the one scenario I feared the most is materializing — Trump is making a play for Venezuela’s oil. I’m not saying an insurgency will definitely form, but Trump’s ploy creates the perfect storm for an absolutely disastrous occupation.🧵

Here’s a thread on how easy it is to attack oil infrastructure. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling in Colombia since 2001 & had the opportunity to document insurgent attacks on Colombian oil targets. They blew so many holes into the pipeline that locals call it a flute. See my photos in this thread:

RNZ's subtle watering down of the latest MMH release is fascinating "one module [...] within the app was compromised" became "just one part of the app [...] had been accessed" "We know that 6-7% of [...] users have been affected" became "It believed 6 and 7 percent [...] may have been impacted."

The way the press is treating chatbots, like they have agency and they “know” things all of a sudden, crossed the line recently from dumb and obsequious to something else entirely. Treating them as alive and making conscious decisions is an almost religious belief. It won’t age well.
