While I appreciate this sentiment, it must be noted that Clr Bligh was part of the ABC majority that voted to defer funding for means prevention fencing in 2024. Indeed, had she opposed, it would have been a tie; meaning the deferral amendment would have failed, and the barriers would exist today.

Tragic and infuriatingly preventable. I encourage everyone to listen to this council debate from 2024 where one by one, ABC councilors lined up to proclaim how important this issue was as they voted to punt funding for it till 2027-30, which they then cancelled altogether this March. (1/4)

From Safe Parkside: look what happened on Parkside Drive after Premier Doug Ford banned speed cameras.

This graph shows two things, 1) obviously that the cameras reduced speeding, but 2) that the improvement kept getting better over time. Speeders tend to get one or two tickets and then learn and change their behaviour. This isn't a cash grab, it's an extremely useful intervention.

This really is shameful. An internationally famous rail-to-trail route, a key B.C. link in the TransCanada trail, 70km of spectacular recreation potential, lost forever because it would cost almost as much as a single freeway overpass to repair. A stunning lack of vision.

The City of Ottawa posted the raw speed data from before and after Doug Ford banned speed cameras and the effect is so obvious it's not even necessary put a line marking when that happened. This chart shows the percentage of drivers going 15km/h or more over the posted limit.

Imagine talking about any other public service this way. Does the government keep public hospitals “afloat”? What about when it gave Marine Atlantic $169 million to support its operations in 24/25? The media does the bidding of those who want to private Canada Post when they adopt this framing.

In the past 5 years ICBC has spent $4.7 million in road safety improvements. Last year alone they spent $410 million giving every driver a one-time $110 rebate. We call on ICBC to spend an order of magnitude more money on road safety. It should be their number one concern.

The City of Ottawa released a report regarding compensation for transit users. One of the main ways they identified to make the service better in the short term was transit priority measures, one of the cheapest ones identified was continuous bus lanes! This is cheap and easy, do it now!

The math isn’t math-ing to get real Road Safety results for the City of Ottawa. The headlines continue to shock and appall: individuals are losing their lives, people are seriously hurt. The province put us into this funding situation, but we will be responsible for getting ourselves out of it.

"Waymo has told advocates that expecting it to respect bike lanes is 'too high a bar' because customers expect to be dropped off in them." To be crystal clear, it's illegal for a car to be in a bike lane. It doesn't matter what Waymo's customers expect; the company shouldn't be doing it.

When an oil & gas executive is making more sense than our "liberal" government

After *choosing* to cut $5 Billion from the long-promised-not-delivered Permanent Public Transit Fund, he now *chooses* to subsidize gasoline companies by more than $2 Billion. He makes choices, Canada’s urban communities have not asked for this, but will bear the load of those choices.

What would you think of a driver going 50% faster than the speed limit? Reckless, dangerous, lawless..? Well what would you think of a politician setting a speed limit 50% higher than is recognised as best practice for where pedestrians and cyclists mix with motors in a planned and frequent manner?

A single accident can be a horrible one-off event. Consistent accidents in a single location is bad, dangerous civic design. We can do better. No one has to die on city roads, ever.

This should lay to rest the idea that "gentle density" will solve anti-housing backlash. Calgary legalized multiplexes (2 storeys, 60% lot coverage) by right and still faced the same headwinds. We won't get homes built by pre-emptively watering down housing reforms, so let's aim higher in Vancouver.

Vancouver is selectively destroying its favourite businesses to build apartments above pharmacies on polluted streets. We do this because it's illegal to build apartments on the quiet streets.

BC Ferries suggests people take public transit and walk on as they deal with mechanical issues this long weekend. Unfortunately, the BC NDP cut BC Transit funding which was mostly taken from their extra hours budget, so they can't run extra buses to make up for the increased walk on passengers. #yyj

Metro Vancouver planning expressly pushes people out of the urban core and into the suburbs, and this is a direct consequence: cutting transit in the core areas. Housing and transit SHOULD be a virtuous cycle, but our housing system is so dysfunctional we're getting the opposition outcome.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you design a system and 50% of its users are using it wrong, that is not user error. You cannot blame users for that, you built a terrible system.
