America was set up for it, until public transit was dismantled and city neighborhoods were bulldozed for freeways at the behest of the car lobby. We can absolutely go back to a less car dependent society, in fact the fate of the climate depends on it.

What people who don't ride don't understand: As soon as the bike lane ends, drivers act like murderous assholes. This is the only 2 blocks w/o bike infra out of a 15 mi ride I was taking my very bike hesitant extended family on. This violent behavior is why we demand concrete protected bike lanes.

It's interesting that people think congestion pricing only works if you have New York density and transit -- folk wisdom. Congestion pricing can work anywhere you use it. Most car trips in the USA are under 3 miles. Congestion pricing removes both implied and explicit subsidies to drive everywhere.

In 2026, California should take what it learned from this task force as well as what overwhelming evidence suggests and introduce a weight tax for passenger vehicles. Non-commercial SUVs and pickup trucks should be prohibitively expensive to own and operate.

I for one am sick of my tax dollars going to constantly repaving roads destroyed by massively oversized single occupancy vehicles.

This is how it works for my family. We’ve done a lot more little, fun and more local adventures because of the cargo bike. For the #yyj business community, that’s meant more trips downtown and to your businesses and restaurants—because of the cargo bike and with the safe cycling network.

The real game changer for urban mobility would be free transfers between transit and scooter/bike rentals, including inclusion of unlimited scooters/bike use on monthly and company-sponsored passes. Do any cities do this?

This tracks, a totally unintended consequence of getting an e-cargo bike is that family errands on weekends are way less of a hassle, and dare I say fun!

Yes, the law says cars must keep 2 m when overtaking bikes (1, 5 m in low-speed urban traffic). Great. Necessary. Long overdue. But a warning sign and a rule won’t protect me at 100+ km/h. Laws don’t replace safe, separated bike lanes.

The most under-reported story of the year, IMO, is about the national implications of the extreme and wildly popular success of congestion pricing in New York City. When you remove cars from cities, you not only make money for things the city needs; you make people in the city much, much happier.

Right on red is just totally crazy to me. I’m from the uk where, when a light is red you stop. Moving to Vancouver, Canada, I found it totally nonsensical that it’s legal! I’ve had so many close calls and witnessed so many close calls but making even the smallest gains seems to take forever

The problem with bikeshares being owned by rideshare companies.

Ban cars from the center of cities until we can figure out what's going on with drivers. That's the current playbook for ebikes which are orders of magnitude less dangerous to pedestrians.

Took visiting family to see the Hotel Del. When we were crossing Orange a SUV driver drove at full speed through a large crowd of us pedestrians in the crosswalk, doing a right turn on red. Missing us by only inches. This is the result of having zero consequences for reckless driving.

Designing society to necessitate everyone driving a deadly weapon to get around was a mistake.

Devastating.

Safe streets aren't smooth, they have friction. This design uses curbs, bollards, and pavement color differentiation to create visual friction. It forces the driver to slow down and engage with their surroundings. No sign can do the work of proper design.
