Our longtime volunteer @rhifaux.bsky.social was hit by a driver yesterday on the way home from a road safety workshop at city hall. She is home from the hospital and recovering with a broken wrist. We're grateful it wasn't worse, and outraged it happened at all. More to say soon.

Heard about this incident from multiple witnesses. Second crash (that I know of) in the area since this detour now. When will we see some changes?

Sad to learn that a cyclist was hit at 12th and Quebec yesterday, day 2 of this detour. I don't know the specifics of what led to that crash, but I sincerely hope we can see some quick action to ensure the local bikeways are a safe travel option - right now they're really not.

5 people have been killed on the roads in Metro Vancouver in the last week, including a driver, a cyclist, and 3 pedestrians, one of whom was a young child. Each of them had lives, families and friends, aspirations and potential that will not be realized. Each of them could have been me, or you.

The streetscape where this happened. No sidewalks, the only bit of gravel space beside the road used for more parking (despite massive driveways and garages at each house). This is a half block from a daycare and elementary school.

ABC councillors saying that it's "unfortunate" people are linking closed baby change tables as being political, or part of the budget. But it was a deputy city manager that explicitly raised removing them from high vandalism areas as part of cutting the budget for maintenance of civic facilities.

Repairing basic public amenities and infrastructure is our government's job. Local governments have dealt with MUCH bigger and more challenging vandalism issues than this one - copper from street lights for example - and come up with solutions better than "sorry, no more street lights"

Heartbreaking circumstances met with awesome community organizing - this new #WalkingSchoolBus in Chicago walks 80-100 (!!!) kids to school every day amidst ICE raids that are keeping many parents home. Kudos to the moms organizing.
