When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office on January 1, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs. Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.

Since this City Council took office in 2022, 50 children have been killed in traffic in New York City. Today, we rallied at City Hall, placing 50 pairs of white shoes on the steps to represent each child lost during this Council's tenure. Universal daylighting will save lives.

Cristian Vazquez is the seventh person on a bike to be killed by dooring this year in New York City. He was riding an electric Citi Bike, capped at 15 mph. Mayor Adams' e-bike speed limit didn't save his life. A protected bike lane might have. Where was he supposed to ride?

We are heartbroken to hear that another New Yorker was killed for daring to ride a bike. This 25-year-old man was killed when he was "doored" by a driver opening their car door into his bike. This young man is the sixth person to die by dooring this year alone.

Thank you to Majority Leader Amanda Farías for signing on to universal daylighting! To avoid preventable crashes, drivers and pedestrians need to be able to see each other. Intro 1138 is a common-sense bill that will save lives, and now it's one step closer to passing!

This is what New York City's streets look like when we let Washington tell us what to do. We need the 34th Street Busway so emergency vehicles, trucks, and buses that carry 28,000 people daily can get to where they're going. Mayor Adams and @governor.ny.gov — unpause the project.

Protected bike lanes make everyone safer. Court Street "was among the most dangerous roads in Brooklyn, with 155 people injured in five years through 2024, including two fatalities"

"Nothing is being built, even though the administration said outdoor e-bike charging infrastructure would be a major part of solving the e-bike battery fire crisis."

What is the point of an e-bike speed limit if DoorDash workers get fired for observing it? These Silicon Valley delivery app companies force their workers to make deliveries at unsafe speeds. The City Council needs to regulate them.

One year ago this week, two New Yorkers were lost in two separate and preventable car crashes. Amanda Servedio, 36, was killed while cycling home in Astoria, by a super speeder with 45 speed camera violations in the previous year, who was being pursued in a reckless police chase.

Why should New Yorkers on bikes be harassed, ticketed, or given criminal summonses for traveling 16 mph, when the driver of a vehicle that weighs 80x as much doesn't even receive a ticket for traveling 35 mph? This is a nonsensical, backward policy — not any real solution.

"Nothing captures that neglect more starkly than the death of May Kwok... She was sitting on one of the few places to rest along the entire corridor — a street so hostile to pedestrians that even sitting down can be fatal. This street, as it stands, serves no one."

When streets are clogged with cars, emergency vehicles get stuck in gridlock. We need the 34th Street Busway now.

The Trucking Industry of New York "is demanding that the Federal Highway Administration abandon its objection to the 34th Street busway... The plan for 34th Street will allow trucks drivers to drive the length of the corridor, like they can on almost every busway in the city"

In Eastern Queens, buses are a lifeline, and these new lanes will mean shorter commutes, less time waiting, and more dependable service for hundreds of thousands of working New Yorkers.

We're appalled by yesterday's ICE raid on Canal Street. At Transportation Alternatives, we believe everyone deserves to get home safe. Nobody should have to worry about getting kidnapped by federal agents rampaging through our streets. Immigrants make New York what it is.

Trump wants to trap New Yorkers in traffic by blocking federal funding for the 34th Street Busway. @governor.ny.gov has been a transit champion, and right now city and state leaders need to continue standing up for mass transit and infrastructure against Washington bullies.

"A recently introduced bill by Council Member Crystal Hudson (D-Crown Heights), would eliminate the Class 3 category for e-bikes in New York City... The bill has the support of 22 Council members, Los Deliveristas Unidos and Transportation Alternatives."

New Yorkers are riding the slowest buses in the nation. The 34th Street Busway would help fix that. On Friday, we found out that the Trump administration was trying to stop the project. So we immediately sprang into action, putting together an emergency rally a few hours later.
