I'm horrified that gunshots have been fired near the White House and grateful to the Secret Service for their swift response.   There is no room for political violence in our democracy.

New Yorkers shouldn’t have to worry every time it rains. Ahead of this weekend’s storms, City workers have been out across all five boroughs clearing and inspecting catch basins in flood-prone neighborhoods.

Today I joined the Department of Environmental Protection in Bushwick to clear a catch basin overflowing with debris and litter on Knickerbocker Avenue, one of the areas hit hardest by Wednesday’s storm.

If you see a clogged catch basin, call 311. And if you’re able, help your neighbors by clearing leaves or litter from nearby grates before the rain arrives.

The flooding we witnessed on Thursday was a reminder that natural disasters can strike without warning — and that emergency preparedness saves lives.

I was grateful to join emergency responders yesterday at New York City’s Continuity of Operations Full Scale Exercise Training, a 10-day summit that equips frontline workers with protocols for large-scale emergencies and natural disasters.

As climate change intensifies extreme weather, you can rest assured that our city has prepared for the worst, so we can protect New Yorkers when it matters most.

The summer is a time for young people to enjoy the city, have new experiences, get a job or simply rest. It’s not a time for violence.

As potential heavy rains move in this holiday weekend, we are mobilizing City government to keep New Yorkers safe — from clearing catch basins in flood-prone neighborhoods to monitoring downed trees and storm-related hazards.

2 young New Yorkers fell while subway surfing on a J train near the Williamsburg Bridge. One teen is dead. Another is fighting for his life. This is a preventable tragedy. No family should get a call like that. Subway surfing is deadly. My heart breaks for the families of these young people.

Today I spoke with families in Hollis, Queens, many of whom say their lives and homes were upended by devastating flooding last night. I also met the city workers and emergency responders who are working around the clock to get this community back up on its feet.

With flooding season here, New York City government is working to keep New Yorkers prepared and safe.
