Deep gratitude for the activists and political leaders advancing a Vision Zero agenda. Traffic violence is not inevitable. Stopping it is possible and necessary.

Begging publications to stop treating existential threats as if they're fun hypotheticals. "What would it mean for Canada to become the 51st State?" "What's the path to a Trump 3rd term?" This isn't a college term paper. Do your jobs

Over the past few years, I've frequently criticized Brian Montague for living in North Vancouver. Today I'd like to formally issue an apology. It turns out he actually lives in Kelowna.

In voting down this motion, Clr Montague indignantly claimed that the VPD "puts out a message telling drivers to avoid non-essential travel every year" and that to suggest otherwise is "outright false." Can anyone find evidence of this? Here's their PSA for this year:

Maybe the reason Brian Montague brought forward the amendment to kill this Halloween safe streets motion is that he's still recovering from the time children "intimidated" him with their climate change art.

This is a pretty hilarious take given that Sim didn't engage with the City or First Nations at all when he decided to spontaneously get rid of the park board over a personal upset

Bitcoin fans (including unfortunately our own mayor) love talking about how two of Bitcoin's greatest assets are that it isn't used for crime and that it's outside government control. Both of which are consistently shown to be untrue.

This budget is reckless. Our infrastructure is crumbling, our amenities are quite literally falling apart. A 0% increase combined with a raise for the VPD means big cuts to already struggling services and infrastructure, no matter how ABC wants to spin it.

Our "progressive" government will bend over backwards to make driving slightly cheaper (gas prices didn't even go down btw good job lining the pockets of the oil & gas industry) but won't do anything to prevent about one death per day on our roads.

Montague doesn't even live in Vancouver, has brought forward zero good ideas in 3 years on council, and only made it into the chamber because the VPD endorsed Sim and wanted their personal spokesperson at the table. He's a bully and actively makes our city worse.

I love google maps for cycling directions. "I see you're already on Point Grey Road, one of the best bike routes in the city, and it takes you directly to your destination. But have you considered rerouting to the alley between 2nd and 3rd ave instead?"

If you're wondering why our facilities our crumbling, our infrastructure projects are half-built, our arts & culture sector is struggling, it's simple. Our current government is committed to keeping property taxes artificially low, while handing a blank cheque to the police. (1/3)

Why are "nation building projects" always things that accelerate the destruction of the planet largely to the benefit of multinational corporations, and never things that would benefit millions of Canadians like, say, high speed passenger rail?

As usual Ford is wrong on the basics. “Eighty-five per cent of people who have been issued one ticket have only been issued [that] one ticket” People are caught speeding once, get the message, and change their behaviour. It's incredibly effective & saves lives.

There's a reason why the US leads the world in chronic illnesses, and why kids are having a harder time making social connections these days, and it's not vaccines. It's that their built environment looks like this. Of course neither Oz nor RFK have any interest in fixing it.

Main St is so annoying to cross around 6th-7th Ave that on more than one occasion I saw Cartems and found myself craving a donut, but couldn't be bothered to cross to the other side of the street. My dumb hot take is that it's one of the reasons they closed. Anyway please go vote in this

A lot of Canadian businesses are going to lose a huge chunk of their customer base and are going to struggle to survive. A reminder to buy local, including online, and especially if you can make the switch from an American vendor to a Canadian one.

Small businesses that relied on duty-free U.S. shipping wonder if they can survive without it | CBC News
As of Friday, Canada's small businesses can no longer ship small packages to the U.S. duty-free — and some online sellers are worried that their companies won't survive the hit.

His refusal to cooperate with the investigation probably tells you exactly what he was like as a cop. Always thinking he's above any rules and too arrogant to ever self reflect. No wonder the VPD wanted this guy on council.

The judge found that the driver, who drove through a 20-second-stale red light and killed an infant, was "not guilty of dangerous driving causing death" 🤯 because it was just a "momentary lapse of attention." Just a single lapse, in addition to these other momentary lapses:

All the new housing at the "Amazing Brentwood" is genuinely great but the streetscape is brutal. Exit your building and your options are: bake on the pavement, try not to get hit crossing a 7 lane arterial, admire the gas stations and car lots, and... uh that's about it

There was one building on the corner of the future Burrard Slopes Park site that refused to sell to the city, creating this awkward carve-out. But recently it looks like it's for sale. Could the City buy it now? It'd be awesome for the entire block to be a park!

I find this "grok imagine" (and equivalent) stuff extremely off-putting. Surely I'm not alone? These moments didn't actually happen, creating these alternate realities is weird and creepy. Not to mention how hard it'll be to believe anything we see pretty soon.

*Taps sign* This is a hypothetical pipedream almost as stupid as "let's burn down Stanley Park to heat Second Beach Pool". In no scenario is it "actually going to help the environment." It's frankly embarrassing.

Heating Kits Pool with bitcoin mining isn't some cool, edgy, eco-friendly genius move. It's more equivalent to burning down a forest to generate some useless gambling tokens and hoping that a bit of the radiant heat warms the pool. This is barely a metaphor.

I keep seeing stories about how AI and Crypto might be good for the environment and they all basically boil down to "these industries are SO energy intensive that they might force countries to invest more in renewables." Sorry no, that logic doesn't follow.

Cutting arts funding and asking them to find money in the private sector is a double whammy, because ABC also opened city assets to corporate sponsorship. Now small festivals and theatres not only get less city money, they also have to compete with the city itself for corporate dollars.

On Monday, a driver in North Van got confused and slammed into a building, fortunately hurting no one. The RCMP's reply: "Sometimes things happen." Today, a driver nearly killed someone in a parking lot. If your attitude towards road safety is "oops, things happen" then yes, things will happen.

Surrey has a big transit defect and huge road safety problem, so of course it makes perfect sense that our very cash-strapped transit organization should fund a bunch of road widenings across the city 😒
