Like other sculpins, prickly sculpins don’t have “typical” fish scales + are instead covered with prickles. They’re smooth to the touch when moving from the head to tail, but rough in the reverse direction- similar to a cat’s tongue. No wonder their species name asper means “rough”! #25DaysofFishmas
