MPAC is supposed to reassess property values every four years, but it has now been nearly a decade. The Ford Government has postponed assessments indefinitely to look into the 'fairness' of the system. Ironic given the resulting unfairness.

To be very clear, in case there's any misunderstanding, these properties are all in the same city and pay the exact same tax rate. It's the assessed value that's broken. First example again, even though they currently have the same listing price, the assessed value is: ↙️ $679,000 | $565,000 ↘️

And today at finance committee, we took another important step by approving a plan to exempt non-profit affordable homes from property taxes. This means eight non-profit agencies who are responsible for almost 300 homes in Ottawa will no longer have to pay property taxes.

This single apartment building contributes 2.4x more property taxes than all of these parking lots combined, in just ONE EIGHT (1/8) the space! That's TWENTY times more efficient! This apartment provides housing and is giving our city a huge surplus of taxes. We need more of this!

Even though the changes to paid parking hours were passed unanimously by council, people have directed their anger at me alone. This is not ideology, it’s data. When there is less than 80% street parking capacity at any given time, we charge for parking. This INCREASES availability.

I have been relatively quiet on here this week, because my office has been dealing with a barrage of email from people who attend a particular church, upset about the addition of paid parking on Saturdays nearby. BTW: there 525 free parking spots within the 400m zone (and 202 spots within 200m).

Not just being siphoned off, but being siphoned off to pay for parking of all things. As if we need to further subsidize parking in our city.

Here's some more confirmation about how expensive providing parking is from questions yesterday. "It costs more to build than what we could get from market leases going forward. And that's average across the city, that's not just us. It's just any parking is not profitable." This is a choice.

Straight from the source at Ottawa City Hall: Building parking costs more than it ever makes back. It's never profitable.

Every time we choose to subsidize parking we make other choices less attractive. Why would I walk, bike, or take the bus when there's an abundance of parking at every stop? This leads to people thinking that cars are the best choice, but they've just been subsidized the most.
