there is a *lot* of first-person prose out there that feels vague and impersonal, lacking in immediacy and emotional intimacy, etc. and there is just as much third-person prose that’s exactly the opposite

my unpopular writing opinion: the choice of first- vs. third-person narration has a lot of downstream effects on a story’s prose, but its effect on the reader’s ability to project onto the main character is WILDLY overstated. a competent writer can put you up inside a freak no matter the person
