I spent an hour this afternoon reading an AI prompt engineering subreddit out of morbid curiosity. It sure does feel like a lot of people trying to find meaning in randomness, instead of doing the clearly easier thing and writing an email themselves.

The “AI isn’t going anywhere” argument makes no sense because these companies are losing billions of dollars per year with no clear path to profitability; the servers AI runs on require massive material inputs like chips and electricity that cost money. When the money runs out AI is going away.

anyone who has actually tried this knows how little AI knows about academic literature bases. you have to feed it the literature and be so specific that it’s not worth it. your brain is so much more efficient and effective and honestly creative. AI wastes time.

Reading is thinking, and afterwards, writing is thinking. Doing an "AI" summary eliminates thinking in both steps. A doc told me some of her colleagues are using "AI" to write their case notes. Her take: oh hell no, because writing the case notes is when you think about the case.

What strikes me over and over again about the reality we are currently creating with so-called “generative AI” is that it’s always pitched as saving human time and effort. But this is only true if you are a parasitic grifter. For anyone with principles, anyone who cares about reality

Or better yet: make GenAI about an assault on civics. Because if you are selling a product that necessarily attempts to con one person into believing they are engaging with another person when they are not, you’re not just ruining education.
