SDOT built this cool staircase at John Muir Elementary! This replaces a muddy desire path. Just two years ago or so this intersection had no crosswalks, no stop signs, and cars would speed past here to bypass Rainier on the regular. Thank you @seattledot.bsky.social Safe Routes to School!

The best part of car-free weekends on Lake Washington Blvd is seeing so many other people enjoy one of the best parks in Seattle.

Some good news: the number of crashes on MLK Way between Rainier Ave and the I-90 lid was cut in half between 2023 and 2025 (20 vs 10). What happened in 2024? SDOT built protected bike lanes along this segment.

We've heard some rumors that it's hard to get to Lake Washington Boulevard during bicycle weekends, so we decided to head down and meet up with friends including @transittrekker.bsky.social using as many modes as possible!

This intersection is dangerous by design. It lacks any of the facilities that are common for other residential streets. The city of Seattle needs to fix this intersection so that our children can safely play in their neighborhood.

This is part of the John Muir Home Zone, which clearly and demonstrably has not done enough to make our neighbors safe. The city must act further to address this.

Opposing Bicycle Weekend is like opposing picnics or sunny days.

Coasting downhill through Colman Park with the group ride from Judkins was hugely joyful! ALL smiles, all the way.

Watching Katie's little one kicking right along with the rest of us was awesome. We rode with a person who has not biked in a while and commented "it's nice to just pedal and talk." Being able to just stop and grab a quick photo of the wildlife was nice as well!

The turnout for Bicycle Weekends today is amazing. And yeah, there are some counterprotestors trying to rain on everyone's parade. But there are no signs so far that anyone is going to let that happen.

I can't express how much it means to me, living in a city that does this. This really is the whole point. We should design our society so that children can grow up safely riding bikes and splashing in the water and enjoying the beautiful world. We've got a lot of work to do. But we'll get there!

Today was pretty special.

There was a guy in fatigues, a bystander, who threw himself in front of a belligerent driver who was trying to force their way past the group ride at MLK today. I can’t thank that guy enough. There are some really good people in Seattle. Thankful I got to meet a lot of them this morning!

Huge turnout for Mayor Katie Wilson cutting the ribbon on the expanded 2026 Lake Washington Boulevard Bike Weekends season. Every weekend through Labor Day is an open street from Mount Baker Beach to Seward Park.

As @jrock08.bsky.social mentioned in his remarks today, SDOT and Parks have held numerous community outreach events, forums, town halls, listening sessions, and more in the past 6 years. It's simply not true that the community has not been heard.

We absolutely agree. Thanks in large part to the entrenched opposition so much energy has been poured into Lake Washington Boulevard advocacy, and it's meant we haven't had the time and energy to work on making all our streets safer.
