The leaves on Rainier Ave are making a pretty convincing argument that the center turn lanes don't get much use -- lots of excess road space that could be protected bike infrastructure.

This passage from @nondriver.bsky.social makes a really important point about how access to recreation and open spaces is often car-dependent. Increasing safe non-car transit options isn't just about commuting or getting groceries. It's about being able to live a fulfilling life!

Absolutely, it's wild the lengths anti-housing people will go to stop housing from being built. There's an occasional push to truncate Metro route 14 for the same reason. This is partially why RR G doesn't closer to Madison Park, and why trolleys were originally written out of being "HCT".

This was definitely a fear of mine with Washington State TOD upzone debates -- I'd argue its politically more palatable for people to oppose transit expansions then to oppose housing because transit riders are viewed as insignificant in most US cities.

Doubling of shared escooter/ebike crashes in Seattle this year. I would also love to see the geography of these crashes in relationship to where bike infrastructure exists.

A school bus is a great way to get to school from urbanist standpoint! It’s so odd that there is a day where people would choose not to send their kid on the bus so that they can bike. It seems totally performative rather than a logical mode shift.

The issues are really deep seated. Every new school I have seen in the 3 communities where we have lived has been built way out in rural farmland on arterial roads. Not in walkable neighborhoods. How we plan new communities is absolutely atrocious.

I initially wrote about my hesitation about bike buses in this piece, but decided to cut that section because I knew it would face backlash and I didn't want to lose the message that school dropoffs are a microcosm of what is broken about our transportation system...

10+ years ago Portland's Community Cycling Center published a report on barriers to cycling in non-white communities. And what hit me over the head, finally, was that a place to keep your bike is not available for So Many kids.

Uff the reactions to this just reaffirm all my deep skepticism about bike advocacy and why I feel much better about the transit advocacy world. If it's not important to you *who* doesn't have transportation access, we don't have many shared values.

#2 Barrier: bike storage. We're trying to figure out this one. @cyclehoop.bsky.social is one group we're working with to see if a network of hangars can provide the secure storage necessary in apartments w/o bike parking. We're also looking at inexpensive in-unit parking kits. 3/X

I share many of Anna's concerns, but I think bike buses show other possibilities and can help create space, programming, get funding, etc. that could make them/AT in general more equitable in the future. I'm really inspired by this work in BC: bikehub.ca/about-us/new...

Conversely, if your city is not affordable, it is not well planned. Well planned cities should have enough housing and transportation for their populations to live affordably. Housing shortages and expensive transportation are *city planning* issues.

I still think bike buses do more harm than good because of how they reinforce stereotypes about biking being an elite activity. In communities like the Seattle neighborhood I live in with big wealth and racial disparities it's only kids...

i know exactly where this is because it's like this every single day and has changed the way i get around lake city. you basically have to cross at one intersection, walk to the next intersection on the safe side, then backtrack to get where you're trying to go. no idea how they get away with it

I just was thinking this before while walking. The average American makes $77k. The old rule was the car you could afford is 1/5th your yearly salary. So that would be: $15,500. And yet all these yokels are financing $65k pickups to drive to and from work. It’s going to collapse

Like how many people at this conference have experienced being catcalled and harassed on the street? Just this morning, I got catcalled while passing a group of dudes, and it flustered me to the point that I accidentally almost ran a red light trying to get away from them. It was a busy street...

At a transportation research conference that is still probably about 90% dudes. We miss so much in planning and engineering our communities when everyone in the room has similar experiences of how people interact with you in public space.

Got to tour the Portland OHSU tram today and learn a little about the history/politics of its construction. Loved the bike valet and bike repair at the base offered for OHSU employees! (the initial space for 20 bikes at the base was woefully inadequate)

It's not getting coverage, but the Mayor also seems to have killed (maybe because nobody cared enough to notice) the much overdue repaving of the pedestrian path. Part of it now seems to be in progress, but still unclear what happened and when the full path will be accessible.

Thanks to advocacy from @nondriver.bsky.social and many others, SDOT and WSDOT have implemented short term improvements to make Judkins Park station easier to access. Long term improvements are in the works, but still a few years away.

Came out this morning with a can of spraypaint to christen the "Bruce Bumps" and "Mt. Harrell" and there is actually paint on the ground to indicate that the city is going to use the allocated funding to fix the path on #LWB! Finally!
