That is TWENTY FIVE years from now. We could close down those ramps TODAY if WSDOT and SDOT cared more for walking/transit folks. The driving "detour" to use SODO I-90 ramps is time-wise on average less than the regular walking detours SDOT/WSDOT impose when they typically fail to put up signs.

Thinking big picture, wouldn't it make sense to reduce single occupancy vehicle lanes on Rainier EVEN and ESPECIALLY if it would cause traffic backups to the I-90 on and off ramps because that would induce more people to ride the light rail across the bridge we just spent billions building?

super interesting for me to hear how much people responded to Alissa and tried to push back about the percentage of nondrivers. I get the sense that a lot of people in the transportation space won't engage with me because they think that high a percentage of nondrivers can't possibly be real.

Highly recommend diving into NRDC's study on car access, which @keawilson.bsky.social wrote about here: usa.streetsblog.org/2025/10/02/report-16-million-have-no-car-access-at-all Where Nadir was killed, 14% of LA households are car-free. But the infrastructure does not match that reality

One more thing. When I wrote about this study showing one-third of Americans don't drive, people were messaging me saying this cannot be true for LA. In LA County *23 percent* of the population is under 16. Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers. Hope that helps!

Now that he's out I'm hoping the gag order on city staff responding to questions about what's happening with LWB is lifted. As someone who served on the official SDOt LWB work group, I can't get my emails responded to, questions about the status of SIDEWALK REPAIRS.

He slow-walked investment in SE Seattle or stood in the way entirely. Thank @tammymorales.bsky.social for safer streets in the South End, even in the face of Bruce. If not for him, all of our investments would have been reality, including home zones, school streets, LWB, & more hardened bike lanes.

I usually try to avoid the light rail when it's being replaced by shuttle buses but it's not going to be possible this weekend-need to get the kid to a class in Northgate. Is it possible to put bikes on the front of Sound Transit shuttle buses? What are the chances there will be room for two bikes?

Was just gonna angry post about how a KC Metro bus skipped the stop with three of us waiting. But then a passenger on the next bus gave my kid a hot rod car, so all is forgiven (and sometimes the 7 bus is the most amazing place and makes me love this city).

The leaves on Rainier Ave are making a pretty convincing argument that the center turn lanes don't get much use -- lots of excess road space that could be protected bike infrastructure.

This passage from @nondriver.bsky.social makes a really important point about how access to recreation and open spaces is often car-dependent. Increasing safe non-car transit options isn't just about commuting or getting groceries. It's about being able to live a fulfilling life!

Absolutely, it's wild the lengths anti-housing people will go to stop housing from being built. There's an occasional push to truncate Metro route 14 for the same reason. This is partially why RR G doesn't closer to Madison Park, and why trolleys were originally written out of being "HCT".

This was definitely a fear of mine with Washington State TOD upzone debates -- I'd argue its politically more palatable for people to oppose transit expansions then to oppose housing because transit riders are viewed as insignificant in most US cities.

Doubling of shared escooter/ebike crashes in Seattle this year. I would also love to see the geography of these crashes in relationship to where bike infrastructure exists.

A school bus is a great way to get to school from urbanist standpoint! It’s so odd that there is a day where people would choose not to send their kid on the bus so that they can bike. It seems totally performative rather than a logical mode shift.

The issues are really deep seated. Every new school I have seen in the 3 communities where we have lived has been built way out in rural farmland on arterial roads. Not in walkable neighborhoods. How we plan new communities is absolutely atrocious.

I initially wrote about my hesitation about bike buses in this piece, but decided to cut that section because I knew it would face backlash and I didn't want to lose the message that school dropoffs are a microcosm of what is broken about our transportation system...

10+ years ago Portland's Community Cycling Center published a report on barriers to cycling in non-white communities. And what hit me over the head, finally, was that a place to keep your bike is not available for So Many kids.

Uff the reactions to this just reaffirm all my deep skepticism about bike advocacy and why I feel much better about the transit advocacy world. If it's not important to you *who* doesn't have transportation access, we don't have many shared values.

#2 Barrier: bike storage. We're trying to figure out this one. @cyclehoop.bsky.social is one group we're working with to see if a network of hangars can provide the secure storage necessary in apartments w/o bike parking. We're also looking at inexpensive in-unit parking kits. 3/X

I share many of Anna's concerns, but I think bike buses show other possibilities and can help create space, programming, get funding, etc. that could make them/AT in general more equitable in the future. I'm really inspired by this work in BC: bikehub.ca/about-us/new...

Conversely, if your city is not affordable, it is not well planned. Well planned cities should have enough housing and transportation for their populations to live affordably. Housing shortages and expensive transportation are *city planning* issues.

I still think bike buses do more harm than good because of how they reinforce stereotypes about biking being an elite activity. In communities like the Seattle neighborhood I live in with big wealth and racial disparities it's only kids...

i know exactly where this is because it's like this every single day and has changed the way i get around lake city. you basically have to cross at one intersection, walk to the next intersection on the safe side, then backtrack to get where you're trying to go. no idea how they get away with it
