I did something tonight that wasn’t a very good idea. I biked 8+ miles from Cle Elum to near Roslyn at night by myself. It was terrifying. I thought, it’s only 8 miles, no big deal. It wasn’t until I was on the trail that I realized, holy crap this is scary. But it turned out fine.

Last Friday, we hosted a celebration ride in the new Beacon Hill bike lanes. 10 years of grassroots organizing = real urban transformation. Big thanks to
@seattledot.bsky.social
and every neighbor who refused to give up. Together, we can build safer, more accessible streets for everyone.

Great news: Sales at Pike Place Market were up 7.5% in August too! That's three months of solid data showing the pedestrianization pilot is good for business. Add your ideas for how to keep the momentum going into the fall:

10+ years of advocacy paid off! 🚲🎉 Beacon Hill now has new protected bike lanes linking downtown to the South End — a huge win for safer streets, community persistence, and better connections. Big thanks to SDOT + all the neighbors who made this happen.

Here’s what that means for Seattle: - 0.5 spaces per housing unit. - 2 spaces per 1,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. - Full exemptions for senior housing, affordable housing, and childcare facilities. - Full exemptions for most apartments and multifamily housing.

Earlier this year, my office went to the State Capitol to support SB 5184, which slashes parking mandates. The bill passed, but Seattle isn’t required to comply until 2027. With the passage of my Comp Plan Amendment 85, however, we’ll be putting these reduced parking mandates into effect this year!

Sitting at a coffee shop on Rainier Ave today overheard a conversation among folks renovating a building across the street. The challenging part of the project? Creating a barrier that can withstand a car hitting it at 50mph. The speed limit is 25. but we all know what actually happens.

The Seattle City Council bullied District 2's elected council member into retirement, appointed their hand picked successor, and then scheduled the most important votes of the year for a day he told them a month and a half in advance that he wouldn't be able to make. So anti-democratic.

Council votes to keep ignoring Seattle’s housing crisis
The City Council majority looked at this map from Mayor Bruce Harrell's proposal and decided that it needed even more yellow, especially in the wealthier and whiter areas. Well, we knew this was probably going to happen back in November 2023 when Seattle elected a slate of more conservative candidates for City Council. Even though as candidates most said (video…

So disappointed!!! Come on folks. These neighborhood centers are great places for adding density. We say we care about housing costs and homelessness, climate change and trees and businesses, and then we repeat the same mistakes!! Exclusionary zoning is a root cause of so many of our problems.

Seattle Times: Buckley and Enumclaw residents are walking and biking in large numbers with SR-410 bridge closed
Read the full story on the Seattle Times. Seattle Times photographer Kevin Clark captured some great images of people walking and biking across the Foothills Trail bridge of the White River, which is currently the only direct connection between King County's Enumclaw (population 12,700) and Pierce County's Buckley (population 5,300). With work to reopen the highway bridge nearby expected to continue until November, people are figuring out how to get themselves and their wares across the river without driving the 45–60 extra minutes the highway detour requires.

The Beacon Hill bike lanes are open! + Community celebration Friday
The bike lane project also significantly redesigned the notoriously dangerous block of Beacon Ave S in front of the light rail station, reducing crosswalk distances and giving buses in-lane stops. With little fanfare, SDOT announced via social media that the Beacon Hill bike lanes on 15th Ave S and Beacon Ave S are officially open. They represent the most significant improvement to southend bicycle safety and access maybe ever, but certainly in the 15 years I have been writing Seattle Bike Blog.

I lived in this donut hole for 6 years. It's a great location for more housing. Great walking, biking and transit access, and there are already lots of apartments. I can't imagine why you would not allow more housing here.

For 9 years, folks are told we can’t build more housing because it’s not in the comp plan. Now we’re doing the comp plan, and they’re saying we can’t add housing to the plan because it’s not in some other document. It’s BS.

Worth noting: Although Hollingsworth has deemed several amendments adding density out of scope because their environmental impacts weren't studied, there's no requirement to study the environmental impacts of retaining apartment bans instead of lifting them.

I really hate the "balancing needs" talk, because the DOT and mayor are basically saying that speeding is a need (!) versus, you know, being able to walk/roll in a public park more safely. Even if you're using the sidepath, it's only separated from the street by inches or feet in many cases.

The Redmond Central Connector Trail now connects to the Eastrail + Celebration ride Sept. 20
From the event listing. With today's ribbon cutting, the Redmond Central Connector Trail now, well, connects central Redmond to the Eastrail at NE 124th Street and all points beyond. This is the third phase of the project, which previously connected through the heart of the eastside city and helped tie together the newly-opened light rail stations, the 520 Trail, Marymoor Park and the East Lake Sammamish Trail.
