What outcome do you think is more likely if we eliminate confirmation votes for a handful of very important city department leaders appointed by the mayor? They become more professionalized and insulated from politics? Or the jobs tend to go to barely qualified friends of the mayor?

Streets, plowing, trash, zoning, planning, and housing are the quintessential local government issues. They drive a lot of interest and controversy. These are not sleepy little positions. If the mayor's appointees can't handle a public hearing and confirmation vote, they can't handle the job.

I say this every time the charter commission has a dumb proposal to concentrate power in the mayor's office: they should imagine a time when the mayor is someone they think is terrible. It'll happen eventually.

If I wrote out all the zeroes in the budgets for Public Works ($500,000,000) and CPED ($100,000,000) would it convince you stripping the city council of power to confirm these positions is a real bad idea?

While we may all have quibbles with our local government, the notion that less democracy and less oversight will solve them seems dubious at best. I urge you all to contact the charter commission (see link in Josh’s thread) and let them know why retaining your city council rep’s voice is important.

The current proposal would remove the council's confirmation authority for the Health, CPED, Regulatory Services, Assessing, Civil Rights, and Public Works departments. The council would retain confirmation authority over executive officers, and the Police and Fire Chiefs. (2/5)
