It’s day 71 of the ICE occupation of MSP. City council members and PTAs and neighborhoods and businesses are running crowd-funding campaigns to pay rent for our neighbors. It’s February 10, and we’re going to need to do it all again in 18 days. We need an eviction moratorium now. And ICE OUT.

Going forward, it is vital that the Mayor hear our city’s concerns and refrain from holding these kinds of meetings on City property and keep ICE away from our at-risk residents and employees.

Given the repeated examples of deception, trickery, and violence being used by ICE to kidnap our neighbors, it is our responsibility to never bring ICE into places where our residents or employees could be at risk.

If the Mayor needs to meet with the border czar or other high-level ICE officials, as he has done in the past, these meetings must take place off of City property to protect our residents and our workers.

I have heard from staff and their unions that workers at the City of Minneapolis have been abducted by ICE while on the job or while coming to and from work. This lays out clearly why the City must be vigilant in the enforcement of the separation ordinance.

Hosting the border czar and ICE agents in City Hall (and its parking areas) is a violation of the City’s separation ordinance and broader City policy. These are in place to protect our residents and City staff.

Knowingly violating our separation ordinance, and endangering the people that work in and around it, violates our shared values and the trust that residents imbue us with as elected officials.

Minneapolis residents have been very clear: being a sanctuary city means no collaboration with ICE and federal immigration enforcement. City Hall is meant to be a space of and for the people of our city.

Following this incident I followed up with Mayor Frey to ask for more information about what had happened. His chief of staff confirmed that the Mayor and his administration had a meeting with border czar Tom Homan. I assume the ICE vehicles outside were part of Homan’s convoy.

This morning 5 ICE vehicles parked illegally in a bike lane and in MPD parking spots directly outside of City Hall. Myself and several other Council Members and city staff went outside to observe them and blew our whistles to alert people nearby. After about 45 minutes they left

There are so many ways to support our community. This is a beautiful one!

Our communities have been showing up every day to protect and care for each other. Neighbors have raised thousands of dollars through individual fundraisers and neighborhood efforts. Now it’s time for the City to do its part and offer solutions during this time of crisis.

The next step is for Mayor Frey to sign off on this. It’s hard to state just how urgently needed this funding is for our neighbors, and how detrimental it would be if Mayor Frey were to veto it.

So many of our neighbors are struggling right now, and since Gov. Walz has failed to pass an eviction moratorium, this funding will be a last line of defense for those who need it.

This morning, Tom Homan said that 700 federal agents will be drawing down effective today. At the press conference he said it will leave around 2,000 federal agents in Minnesota doing “immigration enforcement”. 1/

Today Georgia Fort, Trahern Crews, Don Lemon, and Jamael Lundy were arrested for protesting ICE or covering the protest as journalists. This is a flagrant violation of our most basic rights in America! They must be released and charges dropped. Trump is shredding our rights before our eyes

Don Lemon is not the only reporter who was arrested by federal agents overnight — local independent journalist Georgia Fort just went live on FB to say federal agents were also at her door to take her into custody over her protest coverage in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis should press its momentum and demand not only withdrawal but start talking about the need for immediate reparations, loudly, with the total certainty that only winners have. "You have wronged us terribly and must pay recompense" and let them argue the second part.

There are 3,800 kids in ICE custody.
