During his first term, Trump’s version of “Title IX rights” was literally allowing rapists to remove their confessions from evidence in disciplinary proceedings. It makes me sick to see the media describe this as an “interpretation of civil rights” instead of as a transparent violation of the law.

A big part of the right’s reaction to Mamdani’s victory is the idea that “mass migration” has transformed NYC and threatens to transform America. But if foreigners are ruining America, then women, whose tender disposition favors so much immigration to begin with, are accomplices in that ruination.

And, of course, the menace of rape looms over all of this. If women need to be controlled for their own good, they also need violence and corrective punishment. It’s a harrowing line of thought.

I don’t have to read this piece to know that women are getting blamed for all the ways men made work worse to punish women for entering their workplaces. Stagnated or declining wages? Gig work? Sexual harassment? All reflective of men’s hostility to women in public life.

The right has spent years absolutely incensed that anyone would claim their views are grounded in bigotry rather than principled commitments to liberty because they wanted to put misogyny on the front page of the New York Times with no pushback.

There’s no such thing as “conservative feminism.” They’re co-opting the label “feminist” as a shield against critiques of their misogyny. But you can’t be a feminist if your entire platform is stripping rights from other women to hand them to men.

Utah was the first state where a woman legally cast a vote and Utah was the only state to ever revoke that right. The sentiments at the time were similar to the ones in this article—a sense that if women didn’t vote the way men wanted, then men didn’t think they should vote at all.

I always get drawn back to Al Gore telling voters that he’d only raise taxes on the top 1% and then after the election a poll showed that something like 20% of voters thought they were in the top 1% and another 20% thought they would be in the next five years. Just a total tragic disconnect.
