'Compassionate Leave', the first episode of Edge of Darkness, was broadcast on this day in 1985. Written by Troy Kennedy Martin, it starred Bob Peck, Joanne Whalley, John Woodvine and Joe Don Baker (with music by Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton).

I still love pointing this out every so often.

Rewatching this on iPlayer (even though I own it on BluRay - shut up) and it is always funnier, darker and more abstract and ambitious than I remember. It’s not perfect but it’s partly the imperfections that make it beautiful and unique.
