This drives me insane every time I see it. It's not a monopoly, even though Overdrive is basically the only interface. And it's not a monospony even though all libraries basically play by the same rules under the same conditions. It's a secret third thing related to public-private partnerships.

2024 was about the general inflation backlash that sank almost every incumbent party in the world and bigots (including the folks running the newsroom at the Times) overindexed on a nonexistent trans rights backlash if this is the playbook they run in the fall they will get obliterated

This part of our response essay is where I'm at. Boiling down all of politics to electoralism has been absolutely terrible for resisting rising authoritarianism.

stupid question but here we are: if weâre getting over a foot of snow, is it helpful to salt our sidewalk beforehand? or is that just going to create a layer of ice under all the snow and make it harder to clear?

If you work for ice please understand that your kids will laugh at a character based on you dying in an action movie before the end of the decade. Theyâll be in movies for really little kids. Like Phineas and Ferb shit. There will be an action figure of you with a detachable head

im sure there's a ton of interesting analysis on how much putting the provision of health insurance on to private employers actually costs us collectively. wages depressed, jobs not created etc. the system we have is ruinously expensive for employers. how does anyone defend it

it feels like deja vu all over again; uber and lyft were supposed to complement and not compete with public transit, eliminate drunk driving, reduce car ownership, etc. and then instead they just vomited thousands of cars onto the streets to circle the block for eternity
