There is an increasing threat of heavy rainfall early next week from coastal Georgia through the Carolinas and into the southern Mid-Atlantic states, which could cause flash, urban, and river flooding.

Advisories have begun for Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 in the Atlantic. It is expected to intensify in the next 36-48 hours into Tropical Storm #Imelda as it crosses the Bahamas. Current forecast would bring considerable TC-related impacts to the Southeast beginning as early as late Monday night.

Hurricane Humberto is expected to strengthen significantly over the next couple of days and is forecast to become a major hurricane later today or on Saturday. The storm is currently forecast to veer away from the U.S. East Coast, however rip current will remain a moderate risk through the weekend.

AL94 is expected to become a tropical depression over the weekend as it tracks generally north over the SW Atlantic. Considerable uncertainty in the long-range track and intensity remains, but there is significant risk of wind, rainfall, storm surge, for portions of the SE US coast early next week.

Anomalous upshear convection is often associated with rapid intensification in hurricanes. Here is a schematic from my dissertation and a recent snapshot of Hurricane Humberto, which is experiencing westerly shear. Although Humberto is fairly compact, its structure suggests RI is ongoing.
