many people around the world need to relocate due to climate change. Alaska can show us how to do a good job of a difficult process. these nice kipnuk people will not be the last to face tough decisions.

one thing about me is that i love my home. i can’t imagine having to evacuate one day and never knowing if i could come back but that’s a real crisis for kipnuk, and many other alaska tribes so it’s very important that we support and vote for leaders who recognize and support this issue in alaska

actually it was free the wild salmon in mehs’ freezer was donated by shee atika (sitka native corp) and distributed by sitka conservation’s fish to schools program the high school got pallets of sockeye and coho filets… some of which are being used today for a sushi making class for students 🍣

tlingit chef edith johnson knocked it out the park tonight for the mount edgecumbe students! they got baked salmon with spruce tip béarnaise sauce, rosemary parmesan potatoes, roasted carrots, herring egg salad, beef stew, frybread, and sitka huckleberry/mixed berries strudel pies 🤤

had the best time cooking family dinner at mehs tonight with chef edith + team, nana team, and my cousin patty! a lot of love and good medicine went into tonight’s menu—we went through 400 pieces of frybread!!

quki (golga oscar) is so cool! today he made 5 headdresses for the mount edgecumbe student yupik dance group 🥺 its so great watching all the students learn to sew with him and he gives them directions in their own language today was a great day

while the rest of the country celebrates presidents’ day, in alaska we are celebrating ELIZABETH PERATROVICH DAY 🎉… complete with parades, re-enactments, and banquets elizabeth, a native american woman, was essential in alaska passing the united states’ first anti-discrimination legislation in 1945

funniest thing i saw at the party last night was during the gift distribution when i offered a bag of dry fish to this auntie and she responded by pulling a bag out of her bra like, “i got some!” that’s when i realized i need to step my auntie game up! 😂

i hope i dream in tlingit tonight, that you’re all there, and we’re still singing and dancing together what a beautiful homecoming for our ancestors! you can feel the love in the hall tonight as our voices became one in welcoming them home after 100 yrs next, we need to sing our people home too 😉🫶🏼

rumors have been circulating about permanently closing mount edgecumbe and i can’t help but laugh at them mehs students/graduates go on to fulfill vital roles statewide in politics, tribal governance, business, natural resources, healthcare, fish camps, and more this school is not shutting down

Sen. Hoffman says these problems need to come before the Finance committees before "the building collapses like what is happening in Aniak!" Is there a problem bringing those up? Bishop questions whether it's a problem, then outlines some efforts for major maintenance.

Sen. Stedman, whose district is home to Mt. Edgecumbe High School, says that the trip was a little bit like the "cockroach theory," where the root cause of the problem is bigger and more complicated. "The best thing to do is kick the wall open and clean it up."

The Senate Finance Committee is underway with its hearing on Mt. Edgecumbe High School. The committee led a junket to the boarding school last week after learning 25% of the student body left, with Sen. Hoffman calling the condition of the building "deplorable." 🧵 #akleg

And that's it for the hearing. Rep. Himschoot says the Education Finance Subcommittee is set to continue the hearing on Mt. Edgecumbe on Friday. ( there are also several other hearings on the school throughout this week)

Rep. Himschoot says that school communities have the option of addressing their local school boards when upset with the leadership and handling of a school. Because it's state-run, Mt. Edgecumbe families don't have the a local school board to address, so the Legislature is stepping in here.
