Iām sorry, which is it: are boys in an acute crisis that demands that all the nationās resources and attention be leveraged toward their improved happiness and status? Portland will not bend to Trumpism. We will not be shocked into compliance with his overtly racist, and violent attacks on our most vulnerable neighbors. We must get organized and refuse to allow his authoritarianism to be normalized in our city. Use your voice, be smart and safe, and stand strong.

I donāt want to hear anymore āPortland is dyingā narrative or vague complaints about āANTIFAā as the clarion call for action in the city. All of that led to Trump targeting us. Groups like People for Portland, associated right-wing media ecosystem, and political opportunists own this.

I actually do think the question of what comes after persuasion is a difficult and crucial one. Itās something I had to grapple with as a feminist after the failure of Me Too. But thatās a much bigger question than the opinion column formāor the podcast formāreally allows people to ask.

This should be getting more press, and imo should be tied in with the failures of the shelter model. These aren't just "mental health" programs, they're case management, wraparound, etc. People are going to lose their housing due to having their case managers laid off.

While I did expect some pushback on my Hot Dog Urbanism ordinance from property owners who lose the veto power they currently enjoy, I did not expect folks to conclude that making it easier to come into legal compliance for street vending *checks notes* is pro human trafficking.

Broken record territory rapidly approaching, but once again: Homelessness is not a societal inevitability. It's a policy failure. This is a solvable issue with a known solution, even under capitalism, because that solution is less expensive than the current responses. We just don't want to do it.

As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

An eloquent image: Setting aside the content under the tarp for a moment, teens were asked to make art expressing what it is like to be a teen, and the end result was a mural wrapped in a tarp by adults. I bet a lot of teens would find this expressive of their experience.

The way that people, including some of my colleagues, talk about unhoused people like theyāre inherently criminal, deranged, or ill, when we know STATISTICALLY the main cause of homelessness is the cost of housing, comes directly from a fascist and eugenicist mindset against the poor.

Each time a remotely progressive candidate wins office in the US, the rich declare they're going to leave town. What do they actually do? Nothing. A 2016 study found only 0.04% of millionaires move in a given year due to tax increases. Rich people talk to feel important. Please properly tax them.
