It’s no accident that the only great Gatsby adaptation was the one where a cast read it aloud. The novel is unfilmable and unstageable. Gatsby is a metaphor not a man. The moment you make him flesh, the conceit collapses leaving little but the mundane plot. The opera was grim, the musical yet worse.
