I think a lot of the "streamlined" gameplay came from these campaigns where you rest in cities all the time. Suddenly inventory management became a hindrance to more storytelling when the original idea was you need to plan your pack for an entire dungeon (video game RPGs suffer this as well)

pro tip, dont make your d&d character a clown, have her get corrupted by the god of clownz for rolling too many plot important natiral ones
