Bu…" Welcome to January 1951 at Gourmet magazine. There aren't a ton of all color ads. Most were illustrated. (Much like the covers.) But there are so many things happening. The age of travel was still small. France was THE place to go. If you could afford to travel. There is another detail to consider. The war had only been over for a few years. But countries were still rebuilding after bombing and the devastation and violence of war. The jet age wasn't quite there yet. Cigarettes had healthy offerings. (Everyone have a good laugh.) We are also seeing new processed food products. I know many people look down on that stuff but I can tell you that this was incredibly exciting to my grandmother and great grandmothers. Women who had laboured hard in the kitchen. My namesake wasn't a natural cook. In fact she found it to be a real bother. This felt like the dawn of a new age. Take in the restaurants, the cheese, the wine, and other food businesses. It was a conservative but still curious time. Fritos.
