'Desistance' was always about pre-pubertal kids who 'grew out of it' pre-puberty without medical transition. I know a handful of such kids. They weren't harmed by being supported in a different identity for several years, were supported to transition a second time, & are getting on with their lives

This BBC immigration and asylum story is a moral panic. Poorly evidenced, generalised panic about a marginalised social group. Next week, the government will respond with a new 'crackdown'. This will then further exacerbate public anxiety. You know who wins from all of this, Nigel Farage.

Not sharing that article, but the Worcester LGBT piece by the BBC is up there with the most irresponsible and unethical reporting I have ever seen. I am not defending the activities of individuals named in the story, but with no idea of extent the risk of harm to genuine claimants is huge.

dan's right btw - the news story says there were about 1500 asylum claims on the basis of sexual orientation in 2025, but doesn't contextualise that within the roughly 100k asylum claims - so we're looking at 1.5% of all asylum cases being for lgbt+ people

I know a range of parents of trans kids currently looking to flee the UK. I'm looking myself. I got annoyed recently with someone who called this type of flight 'entitled', as though a child & family being forced away from family, friends & the only place they know is a privilege.

Spent this Sunday evening resubmitting minor changes to 2 articles that are now accepted to publication! Which means I now have 3 articles at the final formatting prior to publication stage, only 1 article still waiting at peer review stage and a little bit more space in my brain.

My article in NW Bylines about the Starmer government’s deployment of the misleading term “gender questioning” for trans kids. Trans kids need help resisting this loaded term. IMO it is being used to open the door to what I characterize as a government policy of “wraparound conversion therapy”

I fully agree & have been saying the same for years. There is no world in which a conversion therapy ban leads to our current Gov. banning & closing current NHS under 18's gender clinics. I worry that some currently prioritising a ban don't care about NHS conversion practices for trans kids.

Recently a UK trans healthcare Priority Setting exercise was conducted for trans healthcare for children & adults under 25(!) that DOES NOT have my trust & that I will not engage with. A completely separate exercise has now started that I have much more confidence in... 1/4

Seeing "trans kids given deadline to segregate themselves" and "trans women banned from yet another part of society" headlines *every single day* while everyone you know and every organization stays breathtakingly silent takes such a damn toll on your heart.

The trial, by design, requires the ban. 113 youth will be told they get blockers. 113 youth will be told NO blockers, but you still have to do all the tests & questions as we watch you go through puberty. Without a total criminal ban, many of the 113 no-blocker youth will try to access privately

It’s true my GP has, after 44 years taking estrogens and been prescribed them from this surgery for the last 4 years, has referred me back to the gender clinic ‘because they have no expertise in prescribing these hormones’ I was signed off from the gender clinic in 1990.
