the ONLY thing you need to actually spend money on is a good hard drive. About £100 will get you a 4tb NAS drive. You can get started without one using regular hard drives, but you should probably spring for this long term. The pc? Any old laptop or PC you find will do the job.

as my friend group's resident tech person the one thing i tell them they should all get is a media server for £100-150 you can ditch all of your streaming services and essentially run your own hyper-personalised one that will always have something YOU want to watch on it because YOU put it there
