All of the evidence, including that produced by the Home Office, says that deterrence has very little effect on where people seek asylum attempt to settle. Yet, we are again seeing deterrence based gimmicks introduced by a government. These will fail and the far-right will benefit again.

The central proposal Shabana Mahmood is pursuing almost precisely mirrors the group 1/2 distinction introduced under the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and then promptly shelved. It's not only a cruel and pointless proposal, it is also a measure which has literally already failed on its own terms.

The Oxford Unity March brought together hundreds of residents as well as dozens of local organisations, trade unions, and political parties standing together to defend our city's diverse communities. If you are talking about 'reforming' human rights then your position is identical to someone who wants to remove them. In both cases, the rights people have are materially diminished. revocation v reform is a semantic issue when the discussion is on how the ECHR applies.

Reminder that temporary status for many refugees was already introduced under the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and then reversed. These proposals from the Labour government are re-heated hostility which has been extensively proven not to work. Labour remain Reform's most useful idiots.

Really interesting reading here. I think we need to see this as part of a broader pattern with law increasingly being deployed to performative ends not just in relation to legal letters, but also the act of legislating and the claim of 'legality' or 'illegality' as an artefact of political debate.
