Ofcom's board consists largely a load of right-wingers with a background in banking. There's only one person on the board with a background in journalism and one person with a background in TV production* and unfortunately they're the same bloke. It's not fit for purpose.

Objectivity, impartiality and balance are all *different things*, and the lazy tendency to treat them as synonyms, and to use partisan balance alone as a proxy for the others, is the root cause of a vast amount of nonsense.

Shocking article in the Sheffield Tribune. A solicitor, Andrew Milne, buying up freeholds of houses and then making (false) threats to the leaseholders to bully them into buying the freehold at a huge premium.

One thing not being said - indeed, I think everyone misses this - but the requirement for the BBC to show impartiality and balance relates to the politics of *this* country, there’s no requirement to show some mythical balance globally, only to report the truth without fear or favour.

Indeed. I feel like a lot of the reactions to the BBC exits are repeating the flaws of this era in BBC News, which is to go 'never mind the professionalism, let's focus on the politics'.

And yet having racists on BBC politics panel shows while there’s an actual Islamophobic so-called news channel with the same racists presenting shows on it, none of that merits a peep.

The fact the BBC Director General, who is a former conservative candidate, is resigning for being "too woke" over some cooked up Trumpist nonsense is quite a stark reminder of the drivers behind the current media environment.

Altman has been quite clear about his strategy. From the 2008 crash he learned that if you bind enough of the economy to your business you can do whatever you like; government will decide the rules no longer apply. What he's selling is unaccountabilty.

I think it’s worse than the 70s because then it was a bottom up phenomenon, and while their response was often inadequate, there was at least a sense that the elite were pushing back. Now it’s much more top down and the attitude of elite liberal circles is “leave me alone, I CBA to deal with it”

this would require a theory for how the assets and liquidity in the "AI market" would, upon depreciation, spring into a wider fire sale of assets and trigger contagion. this would also require answering why injecting liquidity into the general market isn't a superior solution

I don’t think it’s inappropriate to have some news stories about migration issues but it is very odd indeed for BBC 6 Music, a station essentially targeted at hipster leftie middle-aged people, to be majoring on asylum seeker stories as much as it does.
