Typing from a colder state, I think the solution is to sell people on heat pumps rather than air conditioners. “Replace your heating system with something that will save you money and keep you cool in summer” is a better pitch than “install this brand new system just for a couple months a year”

New: the tokenpocalypse is here, companies scrambling to stop spending so much on AI. I got leaked audio from consulting giant Accenture showing AI token spend/'chewing' is not from supercharged engineers. It's non-technical workers converting PDFs to presentations!

Scientific American is 180 years old. The most eminent science magazine for the general public. And today, sold off as scrap to stop the staff from unionizing. Many top editors I've worked with for a decade on several articles have been fired. What a disgrace

If I were writing the script, a terrifying new disease would spawn from the reflecting pool swamp, turning people American flag blue as they die. The administration would desperately reach out to Dr. Fauci for help, who would for some crazy reason let their calls go straight to voicemail.

Since I think a core issue here is “people with pretty good domestic politics who don’t really care about or think about foreign aid beyond vague stuff they read online sometimes,” and I believe we can and must do way better than that, for the sake of the world.

I have been doing a lot of critical reevaluation of Roman and medieval historians recently because I am living through the kind of end to an autocratic regime that very sober, serious modern historians have footnoted with phrases like "an unreliable account from a hostile chronicler."
