My fear is that we are returning to the world order of nationalist interests and individual alliances that the UN was designed to fix, because it caused the senseless devastation of WWI.

(Don't know how long this will be but it's rant time) So, I keep seeing people lament that the post-WWII world order is functionally over. And yes, we're not going back. But what bothers me is that it's a lament. Do you not realize that... it's not normal to expect to be the most powerful country?

It is not *moral* for the human species to be at the whims of a few nations. You were one of those who held the world hostage. And you were helped in that by Europe, and by Canada, and to god I hope we really do stop lifting up your empire, and that we don't build our own.

I am cynical as hell and I spend too much time online but I also get to meet a lot of new people in person every day and let me tell you: The average person is actually pretty nice. A big secret is catching people when there is no audience involved.

‘I thought it was going to perish’: the remarkable revival of an endangered language in Lesotho
Concentrated among 1,000 people in the remote Daliwe valley, siPhuthi has gained a dictionary, a Bible translation and official recognition thanks to intrepid linguists and activists

One of the things I related to most in Extraordinary Attorney Woo is that she would do her best not to talk about whales unless someone explicitly gave her the go ahead and then she’d go from 0-100 in .25 seconds and hurtle along at full throttle until she was pulled over by the conversation cops.

it's really common in the UK to see street signs that say "Upper King Street, formerly known as Dead Lane" or something, and you do some reading and the name changed two centuries ago

In the midst of all this, what gives me joy? A big part of it is all of you, with your creativity and your hope for your projects you put so much heart and hard work into. Every writer, artist, musician and whatever else here. You give me joy. The one thing I know about art is we just keep making

This one I disagree with. One of life's great pleasures is watching Italians being livid over minor changes to recipes, all of which were merely invented, some very recently (Carbonara? 1940s). It's a culture war with zero consequence; given the current state of the world we all need a bit of that.

Nobody admits it but the real reason most people get cats is because they make a really good noise if you prod them while they're asleep.

the beauty of American exceptionalism is that it convinces the American that they are both simultaneously uniquely an amazing country superior to all others, and a dystopian hellscape oppressed like no other with very little stopping you from switching between them as convenient rhetorically
