If institutions and procedures cannot help human beings, they should be ignored or abolished. No institution or procedure should be defended for its own sake.

For the record, this is why I don't care much for defenses of institutions or procedures. No institution has ever cried out in pain or experienced fear or been hungry or had an illness. Only human beings do that.

I know we can't simply ignore reality. But neither must we defend it. Institutions CAN be changed. Norms aren't set in stone. There should be an expectation that anyone with power wield that power for the benefit of people, whether it helps or hurts the institution.
