It's a misconception that voters who flip between parties are centrists when many are just low-info change voters. They have a vague idea that some things suck without understanding why and are voting for change. Promising a weaker version of the same is no way to win them over.

I still think the strongest strategy is to go left and inspire huge turnout among the base. But a strategy like that can also be broadly appealing. You can win a lot of people by promising to make their lives better. Moderation and incrementalism fail at both. Unapologetic progressivism can win.
