Science is a process-driven field. We all have our own biases that can impact our work. As someone who studied anthropology before population health, I think it is a bad idea to pretend that lived experience doesn’t matter. Just b/c you think an idea is bad doesn’t mean you undermine our process.

A few extra thoughts: If you’ve had NIH funding through your career, think about how you’d feel if your 1st awarded proposal got a perfect score, and then was taken away mid-project. Now think about being told that your career depends on these awards while success rates continue to collapse.

Infuriating story Future Dr. Jaramillo got a perfect score on his proposal. “Diversity” awards are scored w/ the same criteria as others. The new admin claims they are exchanging “DEI” for “merit”. In practice they are shutting down research mid-project even if they have the highest “merit”

Something that shouldn’t be lost is @drugmonkey.bsky.social highlighting these are training awards. Overall a devastating blow to the groups targeted. Not only were grants terminated (which shrinks the pool of people who can stay in science), a huge drop off in new awards also shrinks the pipeline.

As @drugmonkey.bsky.social correctly points out, the “training plan” is a point of emphasis in fellowship grants. For F and K proposals I’ve heard from many it is impt to spend considerable time on the training AND research parts. Which makes sense since the award is meant to develop a scientist.

MYF policy is not designed for scientific justification. If it were, it would be an option, not a 50% mandate. MYF is not about helping early career folks. It’s about squeezing the workforce & removing outyear commitments to enable Vought’s Project 2025 plan to shift NIH funds to block grants.

Why lie about something (multi-year funding being beneficial for early career researchers, and/or ESI) when it is fairly simple to check if you are doing what you say (selecting ESI for MYF so they can “build their lab”) Now that it’s clear that’s not what’s happening, how again does this help us??

There are many problems with this statement from Director Bhattacharya. (1) As @michaeldgreen.phd notes, applicants have no option to requests multi-year funding. An applicant may request a front-loaded budget with more funding in early years with justification (may or may not be approved). 1/6
