There are more than half a million elected offices in the United States. There are tens of thousands of elections conducted ever year other than those on the November biennial. Fun fact: that works out to about one elected office for every 500 American adults.

"You made the libs angry--ALL OF THEM" is one of the great cosmic horror stories of modern history, replayed again & again & again. You can make some of the libs angry all of the time, and all of the libs angry some of the time. But if you make all the libs angry all at once, make peace w/ ur God.

And by the way, I'm starting to really warm to bougie middle class chauvinism. Because here's the thing about it: it's remarkably porous, but it does set minimum standards of conduct. The ppl peacefully grinding ICE to a halt in the streets are mostly offended middle-aged, middle-class ppl.

The US needs to annihilate MAGA as a viable national political movement (it can hang on as a regional rump and we'll be fine) *and* dismember the Unitary Executive permanently. The latter can be done by a mix of legal statutes and packing SCOTUS with reformers, although we should do an Amendment.

I think it's a bit harder than that for us to *fix* it but we have much more agency to fix things than Chinese ppl do. And the Europeans have a good amount of agency but also a LOT more institutional clutter to fix before they can really stand up fully.

But if there's a keystone to the current GOP coalition it's that Midwestern and southern suburbs are pretty red, particularly once you get out of the superclusters (and often the urban areas aren't *that* blue). Whacko nonsense becomes possible if that changes

I know this from researching police salaries for a recent paper: many cities have a set of officers taking home more than $500k and they can’t really explain why

One Oakland police officer made $490,000 in overtime. The city can’t find records detailing much of what he did
One OPD officer logged 5,242 total working hours, racking up $490,000 in overtime pay. If he worked more than half of the time in a calendar year, why can't the city tell us what he did?

It's really all about the administrative state. We didn't have enough of a consensus to legitimize and limit the power of a permanent, powerful federal bureaucracy in the Constitution, so we kludged it together by handing the executive power over a colossal apparatus verging on rule-by-decree.

Also want to highlight that for express service locomotive-hauled trains are not all that terrible from an efficiency standpoint. MUs benefit from better acceleration and deceleration, but with limited stops it’s less of an edge given the higher levels of capex required for initial implementation

The problem with the flirts in Metras case is that they're only really going to excel either when frequency is high enough to spread passengers out but not for peak hour like on the UP lines where it's two to a seat and with people standing. The galleries still have their merits regardless.

The article above refers to a legal response time of 10 minutes with most calls answered in 6minutes (over 95% of the city can be reached in that time). That seems longer than North American, where NFPA targets a 4 minute response time (part of why fire services respond to some medical emergencies)
