The challenge with that is that the human geography of the US has changed so much. Much of the population density of Manhattan and Brooklyn were incredibly densely populated unsafe tenements, and many of the downtown jobs were garment or industrial jobs which don't exist today *for a reason*

San Francisco has become the first U.S. city to see an average gas price of $6 per gallon, according to GasBuddy data. It's the first U.S. city to reach the mark since 2022, with average diesel prices in SF pushing past $7.75/gal today.

Red flare for Trump: 'No Kings' rallies a show of political force
With a Revolutionary-era slogan, the protests had an historic geographical reach across the country. What does that mean for November?

It's really funny when they contort the definition to put wheat bread in the less-processed category and white bread in the ultra-processed one, because everyone knows wheat bread is healthier, but modern wheat bread actually takes more steps to make than white bread lol

if you look at the average budget size of of a publicly traded company, whose goal is making money and where every cent that goes to compensation is technically money not going to shareholders, and compare the people who manage those vs. like a comparable municipal budget, it's insane.

I think this is true but we should prepare for the possibility that there's gonna be a pretty massive concerted media push to prop Trump up in the lead-up to the midterms in a way that wasn't true in 2018 or 2006

This discourse is always annoying because even if you use casual correlation, you can easily find counterexamples in countries like Japan, where it’s even more “neoliberal” than US in some aspects (less regulations, more privatization of stuff like transit) and it certainly isn’t fascist.

The NYT says today’s
#NoKings
protests had “no shortage of skeptics,” and then quoted exactly one of those skeptics: The chairman of the Ole Miss College Republicans (as of 2025.) But of course, the Times doesn’t ID him as such. He’s just a Concerned Youth.

The rule of thumb figure cited in the literature is 3.5% of the population. We are getting 2.5% in a scenario where the need is not yet dire, where the economic effects of Trump's unlawful war have barely been felt, where he has yet to try to overturn the 2026 elections through force.

Trump can certainly *try* to rule openly by force. It is becoming ever more apparent that when he sooner or later tries, we will see the kind of mass mobilization that can topple a consolidated dictatorship, let alone an almost completely unconsolidated one.

This is 2.6% of the US population. Over one in 40 Americans came out to protest. We are climbing rapidly toward numbers large enough to overwhelm the MAGA regime in a crisis scenario.

This I think is a really key point. No Kings has shown the ability to consistently get ~10m people out at a time when most folks still basically expect the 'system' to work (elections, etc). If Trump actually tried a coup, I expect we could double or triple those numbers.

This by Rheinmetall CEO is precisely the arrogance that will come to haunt 🇩🇪. It was arrogance vis-à-vis Chinese competitors that helped bring German carmakers in the ditch they are in. And it‘s this type of arrogance vis-à-vis lessons learned by Ukrainians that will cost us.

The problem there (for inpatient less so for outpatient) is that the most dangerous time to be a patient is right after shift change, so the whole US medical profession has moved towards 12 hour shifts, and when you add in sick calls and crap it’s easy to get very long shifts.
