According to recent Seattle Times reporting, a lot of that Office of Housing funding goes toward projects that don’t even bring down affordability beyond what the private market can provide on its own. OH needs to be reoriented toward 0-50% AMI and work more closely with HSD.

I can’t believe how terrible Sound Transit stations like Capitol Hill and U District look less than ten years after they opened. It’s hard for me to stomach something like $15 billion for Link to West Seattle when they can’t even pressure wash the stations they do have on a regular basis.

This is a devastating blow to local news coverage statewide. @cascadepbs.bsky.social is an indispensable outlet for high-quality PNW journalism. I hope the reporters there can find a way to come together on their own, a la Defector. This is yet another impact of the Republicans' devastating budget.

Bad news for news in WA. Cascade PBS/Crosscut was paywall free, trustworthy statewide news. Now, they’re cutting their whole news team, which recently produced the incredible story on Chat GPT in local government. If there’s ever a time to rally around local news, it’s now.

It’s always fun to lap Seattle on housing, but it might be more fun if it felt like an actual competition. Next on my list: more upzoning of the entire city through our Comprehensive Plan, accessory commercial units, protected bike lanes everywhere, and a greater focus on good-paying jobs.

I think framing elimination of costly parking mandates as “making parking optional” and “supporting small businesses and housing affordability” is important. Otherwise you get situations like in Seattle, where Councilmembers decry possible effects of such moves that have no basis in reality.
