Arterial roads provide direct through routes, fewer/smaller* intersections, and priority at intersections. Cycling along an arterial, you may encounter side streets via T-junctions, not crossroads, so there are fewer points of conflict with other traffic.

Subways or new streetcar projects are unlikely to reach Hunters Point/LIC, Halletts Point/Astoria, or some other ferry-served neighbourhoods. Riding the ferry is even better than watching the ferry.
