Exciting news that the first contract for Phase 2 of the Second Ave Subway is being let! We are hoping that not only will some of the lessons learned from Phase 1 lead to lower costs, but that the tunnels are continued across 125th St as requested by Gov Hochul, as is still under consideration.

Direct street-to-platform elevators are better for accessibility. They're more convenient than two separate elevators, and they reduce the risk of stranding riders on the mezzanine. And they make accessibility projects cheaper and faster. A win-win for subway riders!

For all the doomsaying about congestion pricing, the program has been a resounding success. Not only is Manhattan foot traffic above pre-pandemic levels, but S&P recently upped the MTA's bond rating, making it cheaper to fund necessary system upgrades like signals and elevators.

It's good that the MTA plans to upgrade the notorious DeKalb Interlocking, but the project could be made much simpler by deinterlining the B/D/N/Q. This would not only improve service but also save construction and maintenance costs by obviating redundant, expensive wayside signals.

The MTA is intending to end the 30-day unlimited pass. This is a bad idea for New York that goes against international best practices. While NYC's 30-day pass is far too expensive, monthly passes both give transit agencies regular, recurring revenue and encourage transit usage for more trips.
