I have always had some kind of auditory dysfunction that makes it very difficult for me to distinguish lyrics while I'm listening to music. After last night's halftime show, it's amusing to see so many people trying to cope with experiencing music the way I always do.

also my dad is a senior partner at a medium sized law firm and heβs basically said that whatβs going on there is the opposite of the common narrative: junior employees want to go into the office and build connections with the partners while the partners live deep in the suburbs and want to WFH

There's like 600K american adults that pretty obviously need a formal assisted living situation with around the nursing access & social services visits. And instead we cobble together a system of emergency shelters, street angels, NGOs, and hospital emergency rooms/psych wards.

I know nothing about the weed industry, but this comes up around, like, biking, transit, safe streets, zoning reform advocacy all the time. And im like "dang, I wish there were big money lobbyists"... there's a few people and they are doing it for poverty wages.

This is why it's helpful to call it "car storage" instead of "parking."

also the bookstores i go into three times a year or the amtrak coach tickets i buy how i feel about it depends partly on what part of the income distribution the whales are in i guess, although mooching off rich people still feels like i'm doing a bad thing to myself if not to society at large

A lot of consumer things follow power laws. "20% of customers buy 80% of products." I think it's definitely the case that breweries, cafes, restaurants are heavily supported by basically whales/addicts.

one thing i keep thinking about is that as a relatively thrifty person my lifestyle is probably cross-subsidised by whales and addicts in almost everything except for when i pay $55 for dinner in a restaurant when travelling

I honeymooned in Puerto Rico. One of my favorite spots in the country. There's nice beaches close to the airport, and from there you can take the city bus into Old San Juan. Just an easy place to vacation by american standards.

It started turning around again with Prince. Springsteen shouldn't have been as good as it was, he at least brought his normal 250% energy.

The youngsters don't remember, but like 20 years ago, the NFL capitulated to the boring white people after the Janet Jackson boob slip and did a series of the most forgettable halftime shows of all time with like Tom Petty, the Who, Paul McCartney, etc. Just a snoozefest of halftime shows.

It is kind of a wild vibe shift to go from the Super Bowl to a tape-delayed replay of Lindsay Vonn's leg exploding.
