Yeah, I hate to say this is true, but it is. Four justices agreeing is a signal that this is now the benchmark for any conservative jurist. “No more Souters” will turn into “no more Barretts.”

I do think that the Dem political establishment bobbled the court issue in 2016 bc they were concerned that it would turn out R voters more than their voters. In Sanders's defense, he brought up the court at every pro-Clinton stop of his that I covered.

Been asking Rs the political question. They would obviously confirm any Alito replacement quickly, and post-Kavanaugh are very confident (too confident imo) that liberals would "go crazy"* and create a motivating issue for R voters. *as Ralph Reed put it

I usually regret starting this argument because nobody really engages. Yes, winning the presidency and Senate lets you appoint judges. Sometimes, parties get a bad candidate - in 2016 Rs thought Trump was a disaster - and the right has a more sophisticated understanding of the stakes.

Many liberal priorities would be in better shape had Clinton won and replaced Scalia, Ginsberg, and probably Breyer (I assume he would have retired before 2020 in that scenario). Even if she got turfed out by Rubio/Cruz in 2020. Rs would be dealing with a 5-4 liberal court, limiting their ambition.

Yeah, Rs have this pretty sweet situation under Trump where they have a huge money funnel to fund their elections and voters say "both parties are equally corrupt, look at Pelosi's stock trades."

If Rs win in 2028 and replace Sotomayor, it's gone. I don't know why a bloc of left-wing voters convince themselves "the court shouldn't matter, you can't blackmail me" but that happens every decade and a half for some reason

I'm a doomer on liberal court ideas, but there's maybe no issue where Rs get SCOTUS to do more unpopular work than campaign finance. Talk to any normal person, ask if they thought there were too many limits on wealthy interests funding elections. Too bad!

If there is a silver lining in the NRSC decision it's that SuperPACs are less relevant, but the other side of that coin is that SuperPACs were by design less efficient which meant that billionaire money was less effective. Now, not so.

There's no sugar-coating Slaughter. It's an enormously important ruling (far more important than the other three decisions #SCOTUS handed down today). It's a huge win for Trump/the executive. And it's going to have massive ramifications for the functioning of the government long after Trump is gone.
