The addition of a photo of someone who would clearly be socially designated as a thin person actively trades on others' approval of thin bodies. The comments that follow are invariably "you're not fat!" without any examination of what that means for people who ARE fat.

I get that people feel hurt by their BMI calling them fat, but it is wild for a thin person to build their criticism of an inherently anti-fat measure around *how it hurts thin people* and then *never mention the fat people it is designed to exclude,* much less stand in solidarity with fat people.

Thin people feeling insulted isn't what's wrong with the BMI. The problem with the BMI is that it's designed around white men's bodies. The problem with the BMI is that it ISN'T A CLINICAL TOOL, it's a statistical one. The problem with the BMI is its use to exclude fat people from health care.

A low-grade irritation in the shift in body politics in recent years: a resurgence of thin women posting mirror selfies captioned "and the BMI says this is overweight." The point they are making isn't liberatory, it's anti-fat. It's "the BMI is bad because it categorizes some thin people as fat."
