Setting aside the long term effects on population, what would be the short run economic effect of an increase in the birth rate, if it were somehow achieved? More babies, more kid-related consumption, but also lower labor force participation by mothers. Etc. What should I read about this?

I spoke w/ @npr.org's Here & Now about pronatalism. The conversation about low birth rates is really about creating a moral panic. Once folks are convinced that low rates cause major problems that can *only* be addressed through raising rates, it opens to door to all sorts of regressive policies.

Again but w/out typos: the institutional processes that deter and punish bad behavior when informal compacts based on norms and trust break down can work reasonably well (but imperfectly) when bad behavior is rare, but they fail when bad behavior is rampant. This is my central concern: that low birth rates, and the ensuing population panic, is just a cover to convince people that it's reasonable to support pronatalism, when really it's only nominally about raising birth rates and really about (re)creating a gender/race-ethnic/religious/etc hierarchy.

Fun fact. Trump destruction of soybean exports (rightfully) gets lots of attention. But you know what we sell even more of to China? Education. 2024 soybean exports to China: $13B. Higher Ed: $14B.
