Unions are bad on climate change. They just are, because we donât have unions for people working on renewables and environmental progress yet, but we do have very entrenched and old-fashioned unions representing people in deeply polluting sectors. Join your union but tell them to ram it on climate.

okay and here is my âsounds like a shitpost but itâs genuineâ UK heatwave tip: if there is a Saxon or Norman church near you, and itâs open, go sit in it. not gothic, they have too many windows, get you some thick stone walls with some high up tiny windows. they stay cold. and you can just sit there

We just aren't generally conscious of AC - because it's set at a pleasant temperature - until it gets so hot that going to the supermarket to cool down becomes an inviting prospect. Whereas the US approach appears to be "wanna pretend it's winter? Hope you brought a sweater even tho its 35 out!"

Side note: I wonder if some of the European resistance to AC is down to having first CONSCIOUSLY encountered it on holiday in the US where the tendency is to have it set unpleasantly cold. Loads of European public or publicly accessible buildings have AC & nobody actually wants Tesco to rip it out

It's probably time European journalists wrapped their heads around Heat Index (temp + relative humidity). In high humidity, sweating is less efficient, making heat worse, e.g.: Experiencing 35°C in London UK (70% RH) is more dangerous than 50°C in Phoenix Arizona (15% RH)

Londoners, there is a webpage for you to see where your nearest "cool spaces" are when the extreme heat hits - places with water, air-conditioning & shade. Have a look and spread the word, especially to those who may need this but might not think to look for it:

I am BEGGING people - think tanks, governments, random organisations - to DATE YOUR REPORTS WHEN YOU DO THE PDFS. It should not be THIS HARD to find a BLOODY PUBLICATION DATE. You might think everyone will remember the magical day you published it years later. But you are delusional.
